I watched a very interesting piece of subversive psychological weaponry masquerading as benign entertainment* (*normal people call it “a film”) the other day, which – as all big-budget, star-studded Hollywood vehicles do – represented a very revealing piece of predictive programming,
The film in question was called ‘An American Pickle’, and the premise was a well-worn one: an individual from “the olden days” (in this case, an early 1900s Polish immigrant named Herschel) becoming suspended in time – courtesy of the eponymous pickling process – only to emerge, perfectly preserved, 100 years later, in modern-day Brooklyn.
Scientists are amazed and scour the land to see if this man has any living descendants, as his wife was pregnant when he became pickled. It is discovered he has a great-grandson named Ben, who is the same age – around 35 – that Herschel was when he was pickled, and that he lives in Brooklyn, so a reunion is arranged.
At first, all goes well, as Ben is able to fill Herschel in on family history, assuring him that his dreams for his family – that they would become successful and well-off – had been met, with Ben’s father having been an accountant, his grandfather (Herschel’s son) a factory foreman, and now Ben is – and what else would a single male thirtysomething be doing in Brooklyn in 2022? – a WFH app developer.
Herschel is delighted by much of modern life, enjoying all the gadgets and conveniences in Ben’s flat, and he quickly gains popularity as an eccentric object of fascination, when he sets up his own street stall selling pickles.
He makes the pickles from cucumbers he finds in the garbage and rainwater from gutters, but the ultra-health-conscious hip young things of Brooklyn are not concerned by this, only that the product lacks benzoates, is local, sustainable, and vegan.
Herschel becomes a bit of a cult figure, as his uncompromising traditional views attract a lot of attention, and while at first his “sexist” and “homophobic” comments are divisive, soon everyone agrees he is a free speech hero and he is being invited onto chat shows across the land to share his thoughts.
Meanwhile, relations with his great-grandson have significantly deteriorated, as Ben – who is struggling to find a publisher for his latest app – begins to envy Herschel’s success, whilst Herschel is shocked and dismayed to find how little a role religion and family play in Ben’s life.
Herschel, like almost all early 1900s people, is deeply religious, and when he finds out Ben’s parents died several years before in a car crash, he insists he and Ben must go to a synagogue to mourn them at length. Ben is visibly appalled and explains that although he is “technically Jewish”, he isn't observant. Herschel is astonished and can’t comprehend this, requesting that Ben at least accompanies him to the family plot where Ben’s parents, and Herschel’s wife and son, are buried. Ben reluctantly agrees.
When they arrive at the cemetery, they find the once pristine plot – which Herschel had paid a lot of money for, as it had been his wife’s dream to have a “proper” resting place, rather than an unmarked pauper’s grave – is now unkempt and overgrown, and in the midst of being permanently defaced with a large billboard advertising vodka.
Herschel is aghast and makes it his mission to earn enough money (about $200,000) to clean up the grave and have the billboard removed.
As the film continues, we see Herschel become more and more popular and successful, in spite of his old-fashioned ways and offensive views, whilst hip young liberal Ben is increasingly shown to struggle, as he sits alone in his flat, struggling to stay employed, and with nothing meaningful to anchor him.
Ben ultimately becomes so jealous of Herschel that he begins trying to sabotage him, such as by encouraging him to start Tweeting, knowing Herschel will only say highly inflammatory things that will enrage the modern ear.
Yet all Ben’s plans backfire, and somehow, each attempted sabotage turns into more success for Herschel.
Eventually, there is a showdown between Ben and Herschel, and Herschel informs Ben that his wifeless, childless, Godless existence is indicative of a “broken life”. Ben is furious and vows never to speak to his great-grandfather again.
He then finally manages to sabotage Herschel once and for all, by tricking him into publicly sharing his thoughts on the Virgin Mary, who Herschel promptly declares a prostitute who made up the concept of “immaculate conception” to disguise her promiscuous ways.
This is a bridge too far for primarily Christian America, Herschel is condemned by all his previous fans, and the authorities make plans to deport him back to his native Poland.
Realising he has gone too far, Ben seeks Herschel out and tells him he will help his escape to Canada in order to avoid deportation. Whilst they are walking together through the woods that divide the US from Canada, Ben confesses he tricked Herschel into sharing his thoughts on Christianity, knowing what the result would be.
Herschel is furious and punches Ben, knocking him out – at which point, he steals his identity, so when state troopers catch him heading to Canada, he is able to present himself as Ben, a certified American citizen, and therefore avoid deportation. When the troopers find dazed Ben, they assume he is Herschel, and he is consequently deported to the small Polish village from which Herschel originated.
Not speaking Polish, Ben is completely unable to communicate with anyone and is utterly despairing, until – able to indicate to a passer-by that he needs help – he is directed to the village’s synagogue. There, he finds kindly, welcoming people who are happy to offer him shelter and comfort.
Shortly afterwards, Herschel arrives, having come after Ben after cooling down and realising what he’d done. They reunite and forgive each other, agreeing there is nothing more important than family – or religion.
The film ends with them praying together.
Hmm, I thought, well that IS an interesting message… This is the first big-budget production featuring Hollywood stars (Herschel/Ben are played by Seth Rogen) that I have seen in decades which frames cool young liberals as living empty, desolate, broken lives, with religious, family-oriented, conservatives depicted as far more heroic and enviable.
The film openly mocks hip young liberal concerns, such as preoccupations with veganism and preservatives, and pokes fun at liberal shibboleths by having Herschel’s faddiest customers as a very camp gay couple. Further scorn is poured on the tenets of modern liberalism and careerism, by Herschel being told, if he can’t afford help on the pickle stall, he can recruit interns.
“What are interns?” A bemused Herschel asks his gay friends.
“They’re people who work for nothing, in return for experience.”
“Oh!” Herschel’s face lights up. “Slaves!”
“Um, no, that’s problematic…” say the liberals, pulling faces.
But the clear intonation from the filmmaker is that, yes, this is slavery – in Herschel’s day, it was just called what it was and so he recognises it immediately, but because a cool modern sheen has been put on it, ambitious young people have been convinced, en masse, to work for nothing, and to see this as a really enlightened and progressive thing to do.
We then see a long procession of bright shiny young graduates, absolutely desperate to work at a street pickle stall for free, and swooning with pride and delight if they are picked to do so.
The message from the filmmaker is clear – look at these utterly pathetic, duped people. They’re in a significantly worse situation than their ancestors – people of Herschel’s generation were paid for lowly work and wouldn’t have considered doing it were they not – but believe they are living in some ultra-advanced progressive modern age.
Modern liberal delusions re: “progress” are further acutely revealed by the miserable loneliness that is Ben’s existence: that, despite coming from a good family and having done well in his studies, at the age of 35, his life consists of sitting alone in his apartment which is full of gadgets but devoid of meaning. He has no family, no close friends, and no connection to his heritage or religion - and, as Herschel correctly identifies, this is a broken life.
I have never seen a Hollywood film so starkly and uncompromisingly condemn modern liberalism, yet this one gets away with it without attracting opprobrium of liberal censors, because it is presented comedically. However: the clear message is utterly, stonily serious, and not altogether dissimilar to the message of the speech Vladimir Putin just gave about the West – that the West is satanic,. Godless, degenerate, broken.
None of this is coincidental, and that this film dovetails with increasing attacks on the “modern, progressive” West from the “conservative, backwards” East as Godless and broken, is all paving the way for the switch-up of the narrative and dramatic regime change that is coming.
Unfortunately, a conflict with Russia (cyberwar, I expect) is inevitable in the not-too-distant future, and the West hasn’t a hope of winning it, which is all part of the plan. In concert with ‘The Great Reveal’ which I’ve been predicting since April last year – shocking, horrifying revelations about how degenerate and evil our society really is that will shake people to their core (including revealing the harms of the vaccine) – is going to be the presentation of a new, “saviour regime”, and that is going to be the exact opposite of what we’ve had for the past few decades. So, there is going to be a sudden swing from “peak liberalism” which – with the 9,874 genders, the idea that men can get pregnant, and schoolchildren who identify as various domestic pets – we are now at, to precisely the opposite. A very similar shift to that depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale which is, I believe, why that series is so prominent, well-budgeted, and popular. It’s more predictive programming and revelation of the method (all big-budget establishment TV shows and films are). Note that infertility is epidemic in The Handmaid’s Tale, just as it is increasingly becoming here, as birth rates across the world “inexplicably” plummet and there has been a dramatic spike in stillbirth and neonatal death.
I recommend watching An American Pickle and assessing for yourself what you think it’s telling us – since, as we know, Hollywood films are always there to send a message to socially engineer us, they are never simply offered as benign entertainment.
What we have to be very careful about here is remaining objective and analytic, and seeing where this is going in the long-term. Most of us feel that liberalism has gone far too far, and that much of our society is indeed degenerate and broken, so could be forgiven for cheerleading and supporting a dismantling of that regime into something more conservative, more family-orientated, even more religious, as many modern people are indeed atomised and isolated, and being part of a religious community could help ease a lot of loneliness and isolation.
Yet we have to be wary of where this could (is planned to) end up. Just as when liberalism was ushered in after the Second World War with promises of equality and egalitarianism – nothing sinister, nothing extreme, just equal rights for all, and who can argue with that? – the new conservative era will be presented in equally reasonable terms.
Yet in just two generations since the West was presented with “reasonable” liberalism, we now have children having sex changes. Equally, if you look to The Handmaid’s Tale, in the lead-up to the formation of Gilead, the conservativism being promoted seems very reasonable, with women at the forefront, writing books and speaking at colleges. “Of course we believe in women’s rights!” the future commanders declare.
Once the female activists have been instrumental in making conservatism look “reasonable”, and Gilead is formed, women are promptly banned from working outside the home or even reading and writing.
There is nothing inherently wrong with liberalism, conservatism, religion, or many other movements, when they are applied reasonably, lawfully, and not forced on anyone who doesn’t wish to practice them. Classical liberalism has a lot to recommend it, whilst social conservatism can be key in stabilising societies (if you balk at the idea that you might be conservative anything, do you believe in fidelity in relationships? If you do, that’s a socially conservative construct – many other societies have practiced far more “liberal” arrangements such as polyandry, polygamy, and harems. So, if you think “one man and one woman” is a better arrangement than “one man, seven wives and 12 concubines” then you are, indeed, socially conservative in that respect).
So the problem isn't these movements or ideologies themselves. The problem is when the social engineers harness, distort, and weaponise these things, which they relentlessly do. The “liberalism” we have now is not anything that would ever have evolved organically from those who believe in the tenets of real (classical) liberalism and libertarianism – rather, the “liberalism” we have now is something that has been deviously engineered and forced upon us by deeply malevolent social architects devoted to subverting and destroying society (so they can ‘6uild 6ack 6etter’).
Equally, any “conservative” revolution will be stage-managed by the same people, to become something warped, twisted, and sinister – not real, traditional conservatism of the types practiced by “Herschel” and his ilk in their quaint 19th century villages. So, what is going on at the moment with films like An American Pickle is the beginnings of an intensive PR campaign to turn the masses against liberalism and manufacture their clamour and consent for a return to traditionalism.
This will likely be spearheaded by Putin, once he is victorious in war with the West, as it appears he has been tasked with moving the global plan to the next stage (no, I do not believe he is genuine, nobody at that level of global prominence is – all major state figureheads, very much including new conservative champion Giorgia Meloni, are firmly “in the club” and simply playing their parts - just like Donald Trump).
I think the biggest threat to “conspiracy theorists”, and other non-mainstream voices, across the world at the moment is thinking we might be in line for winning important, organic victories – the revelations about the vaccine, the overthrowing of peak liberalism – but we must as ever remain vigilant, step back and look at the big picture, or we may – sorry, but from the beginning of this article I knew I wasn’t going to be able to resist this truly terrible pun – end up in quite a pickle ourselves….

watching us pickle ourselves will give them enormous pleasure, and money. As Neil Ferguson said in 2020, 'we never knew it would be this easy'!
Well said Miri. The masses are much easier to manipulate if they really want something. So you engineer it to the point where people are crying out for change and then give it them. Trouble is what they cry out for and what they get is going to be so different.
I read The Handmaid's tale a couple of months back it's chilling.
Thanks Miri for this interesting movie recommendation. I watched An American Pickle with great interest.
I was amused at the insider jokes about what was coming for us. Set in 2019, the company the scientist worked for was "Omnicrom", similar to Omicron, the scary variant!
And the preposterous idea that someone could survive 100 years locked in a vat of salty water without breathing - almost as silly as covering your mouth and nose for hours and expecting to breathe oxygen normally!
And poor Ben, living alone in social isolation, working from home, staring at his screen all day, with just his gadgets and Alexa for company. Hmm, just like life in lockdown!
And as Herschel cruelly observed, urban hipster, Ben had no wife, no children, no friends and in the end no job and no money.
Interesting too, that just when Herschel's small business takes off, the authorities shut him down, using rules, paperwork and fines. Just like 2020 and 2021!
And finally yes, the moral of the story: family bonds and traditions are important to human happiness.
As you write Miri, this seems like such a benign and wholesome message. However is such a gush of nostalgia for the simplicity of past generations softening us up for the overthrow of liberalism, including radical notions of human rights and freedom, while glorifying such quaint traditions as the iron fist of authoritarianism?
It interests me, the way that movements/ counterculture ( whose origin the members believe are completely organic) have been manipulated and are anything but.
Just research the " flower power" and hippy movement,a protest against the Vietnam war- those members were earnest but it had all been manipulated by the CIA including the promotion of psychedelic drugs.
Great comments, all, and Carey, absolutely! On point as always.
With regard to Putin and Trump hopeium :
In autumn 2021, every Russian region adopted some form of compulsory vaccination. A year later, regions are now injecting citizens who have been called up for military service.
Just like with the regional vaccination decrees, enforcement and thoroughness will vary. But this is hardly reassuring.
This new form of mandatory vaccination is far more extreme than what Russia previously had. Pre-mobilization, mandatory vaccination was typically tied to employment status. Because of this, the Kremlin repeatedly (and pathetically) claimed there was no “true” compulsory vaccination in Russia, since you could always quit your job.
Mobilized Russians face 10 years in prison if they try to evade military service. By extension, this means attempting to avoid mandatory vaccination could result in a decade behind bars.
In other words, Russia has just adopted one of the world’s strictest coercive injection policies.
Russians are being asked to risk their lives in an increasingly dubious war in Ukraine, and in return they are being forcibly injected with an unproven (and most likely expired) genetic slurry
I'm going to guess you didnt miss the point altogether, being erm Polish youself. What I find so interesting is not this so-called predictive programming since I don't watch movies at all ever, and I find the very idea of it stupid (except for the twin towers because of the Joachim/ boaz connection which is also deliciously ironic), but rather the way the psychodrama is used to make us haplessly codependent on our abusers. Like a deflated balloon. Just when you think you've got something hugely massively damning to share like the Talmud and sanhedrian, you may as well have a pickle shoved up your ass and land flat on it and slide aways, disoriented, a little mushy-brained. Then again, the hatred for Christ is also predictively programmed, certainly not organic. The very past pickle in the jar after everything else is gone forever, including thems truly and i guess they know it lol.
